Monitoring the long-term stability of ultrasonic flow measurements

Plausibility monitoring through integrated measurement of the speed of sound

Challenge

Long-term stability and a verified measured value contribute significantly to maintaining a consistently high level of process reliability. How can plant operators ensure in the long term that their measuring devices used are within the expected measurement uncertainty and that the measurement is systematically correct?

Solution

The OPTISONIC flowmeters operate according to the ultrasonic transit time principle and, depending on the model, are constructed with up to twelve beams in different levels. This means that in addition to the velocity information, numerous other diagnostic data are available to evaluate the integrity of the measurement. In addition to detecting gas components, deposits and flow profile disturbances that have an influence on the measurement uncertainty, the entire measurement circuit is monitored, from the converter electronics to the signal converters and the acoustic signal path. This significantly improves plant safety and availability without the need for frequent verification compared to conventional measurements.

Safety benefits

  • Ultrasonic transit time as the primary measured value: works independently of the media properties

  • Offers numerous diagnostic options to monitor the plausibility of the measurement and to identify factors influencing the measurement

  • Compared to conventional measurement principles, maintenance-free and stable even without recurring verification

  • OPTISONIC series of instruments for liquids, gases and steam, as inline or clamp-on instruments, for simple to highly demanding applications (e.g. in custody transfer)
